#1 Live Male Blue Crabs

Top-graded male blue crabs — the heaviest, meatiest, biggest of the catch. These are the ones serious crab eaters fight over.

What #1 Males Means

When the catch comes in, the watermen grade the males by weight and shell width. #1 grade are the biggest males of the day — 6 inches across the shell or larger, packed with meat in the claws and the body. These are the ones you reach for first at a crab feast.

If you’re feeding people who really know crabs, this is what they want.

What You’re Getting

  • Top-grade males only — no females in this batch, no smaller #2s
  • 6-inch+ shell width (point-to-point)
  • Hard-shell, blue claw — live and kicking on arrival
  • Heaviest crabs of the day’s catch — graded by hand
  • Same-day pulled, next-day delivered

Why Order #1 Males

The body meat in a #1 male is denser, the claws give you full chunks (not flakes), and the back fin meat is at its sweetest. If you’re cooking for a serious crab crowd — or you just don’t want to work hard picking smaller crabs — this is the grade to call for.

How to Order

Phone orders only. Have ready:

  1. Quantity — dozens, half-bushel, or full bushel

We’ll lock in pricing on the call, confirm pickup or delivery, and have these packed and ready same day.

Common Questions

How many #1 males in a bushel? About 4-5 dozen, depending on size. Fewer crabs than a mixed bushel because they’re bigger.

Are #1 males more expensive? Yes — premium grade, premium pricing. Call for current rates; we adjust to the day’s catch.

When are #1 males in best supply? Peak Maryland crab season runs late spring through early fall. We can usually source #1s outside peak season too — call and ask.
